Why Does My Heat Pump Blow Hot Air in Cooling Mode?

It’s frustrating when you set your heat pump to cool your home in Sarasota, FL, and only warm or hot air comes out. We’ll explain why a heat pump could blow hot air in cooling mode and provide solutions for you to resolve the problem and preserve your comfort.

Broken Reversing Valve

Your heat pump switches between heating and cooling modes as necessary, and the reversing valve is the key to that process. If the valve doesn’t work, it could get stuck in heating mode, which would lead to hot air coming out of your vents no matter what temperature you set.

Something Amiss With the Thermostat

The situation could be as simple as having accidentally set the thermostat to “fan mode” instead of “cool.” Or, the thermostat could be on the fritz and need replacement.

Low Refrigerant

The refrigerant in your HVAC system could be leaking or already at a very low level. Without refrigerant, your heat pump cannot cool the air it blows into your home.

Ice in the Heat Pump

Ice generally forms for two reasons: dirt on the evaporator coil and/or poor airflow because of a dirty filter. In any event, when ice forms on the evaporator coil, it covers it. Because the coil isn’t cold enough to cool the air to the right level, the air coming out of your vents will feel too warm.

Duct leaks are a rarer reason for ice forming in the system. They contribute to the lowered pressure within the system that creates the ice.
